Photorejuvenation - Pulsed Light Therapy
in Maryland
Dr. Christine Helinski of Brilliant Aesthetics MedSpa in
Sykesville, Maryland performs skin enhancing pulsed light
therapy or photorejuvenation.
Photorejuvenation includes lasers to treat facial vessels, laser
and radiofrequency sources for skin tightening and pulsed light
therapy. This issue will focus specifically on pulsed light
therapy.
Unlike treatments with ablative lasers which peel away the top
layer of skin, the goal of photorejuvenation is to protect the
epidermis while targeting the light absorbing cells beneath the
surface of the skin. Pulsed light sources emit a broad band of
wavelengths in the visible range of light. Filters are then used
to eliminate certain wavelengths in order to target specific
cells beneath the skin’s surface. The light may be absorbed by
either pigment contained in brown spots or hair, hemoglobin
found in blood vessels or fibroblasts found in collagen. The
objective is to remove superficial blemishes caused by excess
pigment, destroy hair follicles and seal facial vessels. In
addition, collagen production is stimulated to reduce wrinkles.
What Parts of My Body Can Be
Treated with Pulsed Light Therapy (PLT)?
Pulsed Light Therapy can be used on all parts of the body. The
most common sites that are treated include those areas exposed
to the damaging effects of sun light, i.e., the face, neck, back
of the hands, chest and shoulders.
The ‘Photofacial’ is designed to decrease facial redness and
pigment and to improve pore size, skin tone and elasticity.
Clinical improvement can be seen after one to two treatments.
Optimal results require a series of four to six sessions at
about three to four weeks apart. ‘Photofacials’ require no
recovery time and therefore have become known as the ‘lunchtime’
procedure.
Photodynamic Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (PIPL) combines
traditional pulsed light therapy with a topical solution called
Levulan. Originally designed to treat precancerous skin lesions,
it was found that this therapy can be used to improve acne and
photodamaged skin. Clinical studies show that one treatment with
PIPL will achieve the results of three to four traditional
pulsed light treatments. PIPL will cause 48 hours of increased
sensitivity to the sun and redness of the skin requiring 48
hours of “downtime”.
Photorejuvenation with the power of pulsed light will give you
smoother, younger looking skin. Over half the patients who
undergo Botox injections, dermal filler treatments and laser
resurfacing will choose a series of ‘photofacials’ to maintain a
blemish free skin.
